Working from Home with No Air Conditioning

One of the positive changes of being post-COVID is that many more of us can work from home. We’ve helped many customers adapt their air conditioning systems in their newly created home offices. However, it is hard to concentrate when you’re uncomfortable. If your air conditioning breaks down, working from home can seem unbearable during Oklahoma summers. Regular seasonal HVAC maintenance helps minimize breakdowns and costly repairs. Breakdowns can happen, so it’s best to deal with the heat. The lack of air conditioning makes it challenging to maintain a high concentration level due to discomfort and distractions caused by the heat. High temperatures can lead to physical discomfort, sweating, fatigue, and dehydration, and make concentrating difficult. Mental distractions can hinder concentration.

Fortunately, there are ways to help maintain concentration in a hot and uncomfortable environment. Here are some tips:

Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water and other fluids can help keep you cool and prevent dehydration, which can negatively impact concentration. Moderate your consumption of caffeinated drinks, that can make you even more dehydrated.
Dress ligher: Dress lighter by wearing light-weight cotton and loose-fitting clothing which can help you stay relaxed and comfortable. Wicking fabrics and natural fibers like cotton often help you feel cooler.
Take breaks: Take regular breaks to step outside or into a cooler part of the house to give your body and mind a break from the heat. Temporarily you may need to move your office to a different location in the house.
Use fans: Fan don’t necessasarly cool down a room but using one makes you feel cooler. Using fans can help circulate air and provide a cooling breeze, making the environment more comfortable.
Stay focused: Stay focused on the task at hand and avoid getting distracted by the discomfort caused by the heat. Accept you will temporarily be less productive. Many people find that practicing mindfulness and meditation helps them stay focused and calm.
Leave home: When working from home is unbearable leave home. Coffee shops or bookstores are good alternatove locations. Remember, libraries often have private rooms that you can reserve or quiet spaces.
